St. Aloysius Chapel - A temple tour to Mangalore

The next day morning I woke with a dream of visiting the great Chapel. I had read the reviews about this Chapel and I was waiting to see the same. This is the finest Church that I have ever visited till date. An old eagle was sitting on the topmost cross inviting us to the Chapel. We went a day before Christmas, and everyone were busy getting ready for the mass. So we thought that we were unlucky as the church was closed at that moment. But a person came and made our day by opening the church and explaining everything in and about the church.

The Chapel was a marvelous standing architecture which is same as that of the church in the Rome. Before entering the church, I was wondering like what makes this church that much special? The specialty is the paintings all over the inner walls, pillars, ceilings, etc... The paintings made us speechless for a while. The guy explained us everything about the paintings. The paintings were too good. That too the coloring in the pillars made me to tell “wow”. There is another reason to make us spell bound. The whole paintings were done by a single man in the span of 2 years.

Mobiles and Cameras are not allowed. Do kindly follow that, as the reason for that is signals from mobiles and rays from camera are spoiling the paintings.

How to reach the church:

The place is easily communicable, as it is situated at a distance of only 1 km from the bus stand of the Nehru Maidan. So do not miss this.

  •  Kudroli Gokarnath Temple
The first temple we visited in Mangalore was the Gokarnath temple, which was one of finest temple I have ever seen. When we went, some renovations were in progress. The temple glittered in the morning sun. Many eagles were flying high and low around the temple.  Lot of tweeties were inside the temple, which gave me a chance to enjoy the sweet tweaking sounds, which was a welcome note to us.

Gokarnanatheshwara (Lord Shiva), is the main deity. This temple is located at Kudroli, which is around 3 kms from  Hampankatta. Two elephant statues welcomed us followed by a big Nandi statue in front of the temple. The temple has a Hanuman mandir inside it. It also has a small garden with pond surrounded by beautiful Shiva statues. A silver chariot weighing 225kg has been gifted to this temple, which is there for display. The architecture and statues were wonderful and we spent enough time in the temple.
Annadhanam (free food) is given for the visitors. The visitors follow the queue in a decent manner. Self service buffet system was followed. A clean hall was there to sit and eat. I did not like the taste of food, but few tasted it well. Few wasted it too. The Menu served on that day was rice with rasam. So kindly get a little amount of food to taste; If you like it, then get more and enjoy the food. Kindly don’t waste it.

How to reach the temple:

From the main bus stand (State Bank bus stand) of Hampankatta of Mangalore city, one can reach the temple by catching city bus (nos. 1, 13, 13A) and getting down at Kudroli stop (in front of temple Main Gate). It is just half an hour journey by bus.
